Wow. You're right on target with this, my friend. As a real "Jones", I can personally vouch for the sharp rise in "the Cow" after 9/11. First thing, my dad stuck an American flag sticker on my car. I didn't want that not because I don't love my country but because it was an obvious reaction to the whole "if you're not with us, you're against us" sentiment that bugged me even then. These days, it feels like we're already so far down the slippery slope that it'll have to get a lot worse before it gets better. If I didn't have a family to worry about, I'd be more vocal with my dissent and take more risks (instead of just putting rude things on my blog: "http://lilprofnotes.blogspot.com"), but as it is, I'm pretty cowed. I hope to God I'm wrong, but things look pretty bad right now. I won't go into details here, but it's scary. Keep fighting the good fight, and good luck!
